Claude Code

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool developed by Anthropic that operates directly within your development environment. How It Works

Claude Code uses agentic search to understand your entire project structure without requiring manual context selection. It maps codebases, identifies dependencies, and traces issues across files. When given a natural language task, it plans an approach, writes code across multiple files, runs tests, and iterates until the objective is met. It asks for permission before modifying files or executing commands, keeping you in control at all times.

Key Capabilities

Claude Code can build features from plain-language descriptions, fix bugs by tracing issues through your codebase to root cause, write tests for untested code, fix lint errors across entire projects, resolve merge conflicts, update dependencies, and write release notes. It stages git changes, writes commit messages, creates branches, and opens pull requests. It supports scheduling recurring tasks like morning PR reviews, overnight CI failure analysis, and weekly dependency audits through Routines (cloud-hosted) and Desktop scheduled tasks (local).

Environments

Claude Code is available across multiple surfaces: a full-featured terminal CLI (macOS, Linux, Windows, WSL); native VS Code and JetBrains IDE extensions with inline diffs and @-mentions; a standalone desktop app for parallel sessions and visual diff review; a web interface at claude.ai/code for browser-based coding; and a Slack integration for routing bug reports to pull requests. Sessions can move between environments seamlessly , start a task on the web, continue on desktop, or pull it into your terminal.

Customization & Extensibility

Through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Claude Code connects to external data sources like Google Drive, Jira, Slack, and custom tooling. CLAUDE.md files in your project root provide persistent instructions on coding standards, architecture decisions, and preferred libraries. Skills package repeatable workflows like /review-pr or /deploy-staging. Hooks run shell commands before or after Claude Code actions, such as auto-formatting after edits or running lint before commits. The Agent SDK allows building fully custom agents with control over orchestration, tool access, and permissions.

Integrations

Claude Code works with Git for version control, GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD for automated code review and issue triage, GitHub Code Review for automatic PR review, and Chrome for debugging live web applications. It supports third-party model providers alongside Anthropic's Claude models (Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 4.5). Enterprise users can run Claude Code using models in Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI instances.

Claude Code is included in Claude subscription plans: Pro ($20/month or $17/month annually), Max 5x ($100/month), and Max 20x ($200/month). When used with a Claude Console account, it consumes API tokens at standard API pricing. Fast mode for Opus 4.8 is available in research preview at $30/$150 per million tokens.
