Codeium

Codeium is an AI-powered code completion assistant that provides real-time autocomplete, in-editor chat, and natural language code search for developers across 70+ programming languages and 40+ IDEs. Launched in 2022 by Exafunction, Codeium grew into one of the most widely used AI coding assistants, known for offering a genuinely free individual tier with unlimited completions. The same company also develops Windsurf, an AI-native code editor now owned by Cognition AI and rebranded as Devin Desktop in June 2026, but the Codeium extension continues to operate as a standalone cross-IDE product.

Windsurf Editor

The same company also develops Windsurf, an AI-native code editor built as a VS Code fork. Windsurf bundles Codeium completion with Cascade, an agentic assistant that can read and edit multiple files across a repository, run terminal commands, and handle complex multi-step tasks. Windsurf competes directly with Cursor and Claude Code. After being acquired by Cognition AI in mid-2025, Windsurf received a proprietary SWE-1.5 coding model, Codemaps for visual codebase navigation, and deep integration with the Devin autonomous agent. In June 2026 Windsurf was rebranded as Devin Desktop. The Codeium extension remains available separately for developers who prefer their existing editors.

Codeium offers a free individual tier with unlimited autocomplete completions and chat messages, no credit card required. A Pro plan at $15 per month adds premium AI models, higher context windows, priority access, and faster Cascade usage. Teams plans start at $30 per user per month with centralized billing, admin controls, usage analytics, and shared repository context. Enterprise plans with custom pricing include self-hosted and air-gapped deployment, single sign-on, audit logs, and dedicated support.

Enterprise and Security

Codeium supports fully self-hosted and air-gapped deployments for regulated industries, allowing code to stay within the customer security boundary. The platform provides encryption in transit, zero data retention commitments, and does not train its models on paid user code. Free-tier users can opt out of training. Compliance certifications cover SOC 2, HIPAA, FedRAMP, and ITAR.

Integrations

Codeium works across 40+ editors and IDEs. VS Code users install the Windsurf Plugin extension. JetBrains users get dedicated plugins for IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, and WebStorm. Neovim, Vim, Emacs, Xcode, Sublime Text, Android Studio, and Eclipse are also supported. A Chrome extension brings Codeium completions to Google Colab and other web-based editors.
