Ona retains Gitpod's core cloud development environment capabilities while adding AI agents, automations, and background task processing. Users of the original Gitpod can transition to Ona's free tier or contact sales for enterprise deployment.

Compared to alternatives like GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod stood out by supporting multiple Git providers beyond GitHub, offering prebuilds, and maintaining an open-source codebase. Its IDE-agnostic architecture gave developers freedom to choose their tools, while the configuration-as-code approach made environments version-controllable and automatable.
