What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an AI image generation platform that transforms natural language text prompts into high-resolution visual artwork. Founded by David Holz, co-founder of Leap Motion, the platform launched in open beta in July 2022 and has released multiple major model versions. The latest model, V8.1, launched on April 30, 2026 on midjourney.com and Discord, following a two-week alpha period starting April 14. V8.1 represents the fastest and most refined version of Midjourney to date, delivering native 2K HD output, 4-5x faster standard generation speeds, and a restored V7-inspired aesthetic.

Core Features

Midjourney V8.1 introduces native HD 2K image generation at 2048x2048 pixels without a separate upscaling step, with HD mode now three times faster and three times cheaper than V8.0. Standard resolution runs 50% faster and 25% cheaper than V8.0. Image prompts and image weights have been restored after being absent in V8.0, allowing users to guide generation with reference images. Style references (srefs) and moodboards are now super stable, producing consistent results across multiple generations. The Prompt Shortener automatically compresses long inputs while preserving intent, and the updated Describe tool returns more detailed prompt suggestions from reference images. Omni Reference maintains character consistency across scenes for storyboarding and brand work. Personalization profiles learn aesthetic preferences from image ratings and carry over from V7. Draft Mode generates lower-cost preview images for rapid iteration before committing to full renders. The image-to-video feature animates still images into 5-second clips that can be extended up to 21 seconds.

How It Works

Users interact with Midjourney through the web application at midjourney.com or through Discord bot commands. The web interface provides a visual prompt editor, image editing capabilities, a canvas for arranging generations, and a community gallery. The Imagine bar accepts text prompts along with parameters such as --ar for aspect ratio, --sref for style references, --sw for style weight, --iw for image weight, --raw for minimal stylistic filtering, --chaos for variation control, --stylize for aesthetic intensity, and --hd for HD mode. Text wrapped in quotation marks receives higher priority for readable text rendering. A new Run as HD button reruns standard-resolution jobs at higher quality without retyping the prompt. Each generation produces four image variations that can be upscaled, remixed, or used as seeds for further iteration. V8.1 also supports a --q 4 flag for additional coherence on complex prompts.

Pricing

Midjourney operates on a subscription model with four tiers: Basic at $10 per month (3.3 fast GPU hours), Standard at $30 per month (15 fast GPU hours plus unlimited Relax Mode for V7), Pro at $60 per month (30 fast GPU hours plus Stealth Mode for private generation), and Mega at $120 per month (60 fast GPU hours plus Stealth Mode). Annual billing offers approximately 20% savings. Standard plans and above include unlimited Relax Mode generations for V7, with V8.1 Relax Mode pending a new server cluster. Pro and Mega plans include unlimited Relax Mode for video generations. HD generation costs approximately 1.33 GPU minutes per image in V8.1, while standard resolution costs under 1 GPU minute. Companies with over $1 million in annual revenue must subscribe to Pro or Mega for commercial use. There is no free tier in 2026.

Strengths and Limitations

Midjourney V8.1 produces industry-leading aesthetic quality and photorealism, particularly for artistic, editorial, and conceptual work. Native 2K HD output without upscaling, 4-5x faster generation speeds, excellent character consistency via Omni Reference, and personalization profiles make it the strongest choice for most creative workflows. The restored V7 aesthetic and super-stable srefs address the main complaints from V8.0. However, there is no public API for integration, no free tier, no native Mac app, and Stealth Mode for private generation requires the Pro plan or above. Text rendering, while improved in V8, is not yet reliable for professional typography. Premium features such as HD mode, q 4, and style references consume 4x more GPU time than standard jobs. Generation is cloud-only with no offline option. Midjourney remains best suited for designers, concept artists, creative directors, marketers, and content creators who prioritize visual quality as their primary criterion.
