How It Works

Users create individual notebooks for each project or topic. Within a notebook, they upload multiple sources including PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs, and Google Slides. The platform also features a Studio panel where users can generate various artifacts from their sources. Each notebook is independent, and the system cannot access information across multiple notebooks simultaneously. Users can share notebooks privately with others via email or publicly with anyone who has a Google account.

Audio Overviews

NotebookLM's most distinctive feature is Audio Overviews, which generate AI-hosted podcast-style discussions that summarize and connect key topics from uploaded sources. Users can choose from multiple formats: Deep Dive for lively in-depth conversation between two hosts, The Brief for a single-speaker quick overview under two minutes, The Critique for constructive evaluation of material, and The Debate for exploring multiple perspectives in a formal back-and-forth. An interactive mode lets users join the conversation and ask questions directly to the AI hosts, who respond with personalized answers based on the sources. Audio Overviews support 80+ languages and can be downloaded as audio files or shared via link. Users can customize the length and provide instructions to focus on specific topics or adjust the expertise level.

Additional Artifacts

Beyond Audio Overviews, NotebookLM can generate Video Overviews that combine visuals with AI narration, interactive Mind Maps that visually connect ideas across sources, and a full range of study and learning tools including flashcards, quizzes, study guides, briefing documents, comprehensive reports, infographics, slide decks, and data tables with export to Google Docs and Google Sheets. The Deep Research feature conducts multi-step analysis across sources for complex research questions, returning comprehensive findings with citations.

Privacy & Security

NotebookLM does not use personal data to train AI models unless users explicitly provide feedback. For Workspace and Education accounts, all uploads, queries, and responses remain private and are never reviewed by human reviewers or used for model training.
