Overview
Repoprompt is a native macOS application and MCP server that serves as a context IDE for AI agents, helping developers get better results from AI coding tools by engineering the context models receive. It automates the process of curating relevant code context from a codebase, enabling AI agents to reason about problems from the first token instead of wasting thinking budget on navigating files.
How It Works
Repoprompt uses a three-stage Context Builder pipeline. The first stage is Explore, where a discovery agent navigates the codebase to understand file relationships and dependencies. The second stage is Curate, which selects the most relevant files within a token budget using codemaps for maximum information density. The third stage is Handoff, which provides a structured prompt with curated context to an analysis model for planning, review, or deep analysis.
Key Features
- Context Builder: Automated three-stage pipeline that explores codebases, curates relevant context within token budgets, and hands off structured prompts to analysis models. Codemaps use tree-sitter for function signatures, letting agents see up to 10x more files.
- Multi-Agent Orchestration: Plans tasks with a powerful reasoning model, then dispatches sub-agents across providers such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode. Each sub-agent works within scoped file boundaries while an orchestrator verifies adherence to the plan.
- MCP Server with 15+ Tools: Accessible from any MCP-compatible client. Includes the agent_run tool for starting, steering, and canceling multi-agent sessions.
- Built-in Workflows: Ready-made slash commands including /rp-orchestrate for planning and dispatching sub-agents, /rp-review for code reviews with codebase context, /rp-refactor for analysis-first refactoring, and /rp-investigate for systematic issue investigation.
- Repo Bench: A community-driven leaderboard for measuring AI coding performance across models, testing large context reasoning, file editing precision, and instruction adherence.
Use Cases
- Shipping Production Code: Developers can plan architecturally sound changes that fit naturally into existing codebases, ensuring AI suggestions follow established patterns rather than introducing drift.
- Code Quality and Review: Engineering teams use the /rp-review workflow for grounded code reviews that understand the full codebase context, catching edge cases and architectural issues before merge.
- Multi-Provider Agent Workflows: Teams can orchestrate complex engineering work by dispatching specialized agents across different providers in parallel or sequence, with the orchestrator verifying results against the plan.
Availability
Repoprompt is a native Swift and SwiftUI application available exclusively for macOS 14.0 or later, supporting both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It offers a free tier with 32K token limit and core features, and a Pro tier with unlimited tokens, codemaps, MCP server access, Context Builder, and agent orchestration. The app is transitioning to a Community Edition that will be fully free and open source.
