Windsurf

Windsurf is an AI-native integrated development environment originally built by Exafunction and Codeium, later acquired by Cognition AI in July 2025 and rebranded as Devin Desktop. It is designed for individual developers and engineering teams who want an editor where AI agents work alongside humans within the same interface – reading code, writing code, chasing edge cases, and running tests without context switching.

Key Capabilities

Cascade is Windsurf's core AI agent that operates within the editor with full codebase awareness. It can understand project structure, navigate across files, propose multi-step changes, and execute them with developer oversight. Cascade works with the developer's existing workflow rather than as a separate chat pane.

Tab provides AI-powered code autocompletion that predicts not just the next token but the developer's next edit, using deep contextual understanding of the surrounding code. It learns from patterns across the project.

Supercomplete extends beyond single-line completion to predict entire multi-line edits and transformations that the developer is likely to perform next, based on broader context of recent changes and project conventions.

Fast Context is an indexing engine that locates the exact files and code lines an agent needs in milliseconds, enabling agents to work across large codebases without manual file navigation.

SWE-1.6 is Windsurf's proprietary fast coding model, available for free to all users alongside support for third-party models including OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, and open-source models.

Agent Client Protocol (ACP)

Windsurf supports the Agent Client Protocol, an open protocol that allows developers to run agents from multiple providers – including Devin Cloud agents, Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode, Cascade, and others – within the same editor workspace. Developers can dispatch tasks to different agents based on the nature of the work and manage them all from a single Agent Command Center interface with Kanban-style boards and Spaces for shared context.

Windsurf supports MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and language server protocol (LSP) for deep integration with tools like Slack, Linear, Notion, Figma, Sentry, Stripe, Datadog, Atlassian, and Vercel. Windsurf offers a Free tier with a light agent quota, limited model availability, and unlimited inline edits and Tab completions. The Pro plan is $20/month and adds full model access including frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini, SWE-1.6, and cloud agent access with additional usage at API pricing. The Max plan at $200/month provides significantly higher quotas for power users. Teams plans start at $80/month plus $40/month per full developer seat with shared workspaces, centralized billing, analytics, and priority support. Enterprise pricing is custom with dedicated support, SSO, and optional VPC deployment.
