Phind was an AI-powered search engine built specifically for software developers and technical professionals. It combined large language model reasoning with real-time web search to provide instant, contextual answers to programming questions, complete with cited sources and working code examples. Rather than returning a list of links, Phind synthesized information from official documentation, GitHub repositories, Stack Overflow threads, and technical blogs into clear, actionable answers. The service shut down on January 16, 2026, and is no longer operational.
Conversational Search and Citations
Phind used a conversational interface that allowed developers to ask follow-up questions while maintaining context across the conversation. Each answer included inline citations linking back to the original sources, making it easy to verify information and explore further. The platform supported natural language queries, enabling users to describe problems in plain terms and receive targeted responses rather than sifting through generic search results.
Phind embedded code samples from retrieved pages directly into generated answers. If official documentation had an updated usage example, Phind reflected that example. If a GitHub issue had a workaround in the comments, Phind could surface it. This code-aware approach meant responses were grounded in current best practices rather than stale training data.
Phind-70B Model
Phind developed its own custom AI model, Phind-70B, a 70-billion-parameter model fine-tuned from CodeLlama for code generation and technical reasoning. It scored 82.3% on the HumanEval benchmark and streamed output at approximately 80 tokens per second, delivering GPT-4-class code quality at noticeably faster speeds. On the Pro plan, users could also switch between Phind-70B, GPT-4, GPT-5, and Claude models on a per-query basis, choosing the best model for each task.
Real-Time Web Search
Phind operated on a sophisticated Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture. When a user submitted a query, Phind parsed intent, crawled live documentation and indexed repositories, reranked results based on code relevancy, and then generated answers using retrieved snippets as ground truth. This real-time search approach meant Phind could answer questions about library releases from the same week, breaking API changes, and niche debugging problems that static-knowledge chatbots would get wrong.
VS Code Extension and Developer Tools
Phind provided a VS Code extension that brought its search engine directly into the editor. Developers could highlight code, trigger Phind, and ask questions without switching contexts. Results appeared in a sidebar panel alongside the codebase. The extension also supported Pair Programmer mode for multi-turn assisted coding sessions and Agent mode for autonomous multi-step task execution.
Pricing and Plans
Phind offered a generous free tier with unlimited queries on its default model and a daily allowance for premium models. The Pro plan cost $20 per month (or $17 per month billed annually), removing most daily limits, adding GPT-4, GPT-5, and Claude access, and providing priority response times. A Business plan at $40 per user per month added team management, SSO, and data exclusion from training by default.
